Joanne is a highly compassionate, respectful and active counsellor who listens to her clients’ needs and adapts individual sessions accordingly. Joanne believes that life’s struggles are part of being human and that counselling is a collaboration — an opportunity to “walk with” a client through their difficulties by providing empathetic listening as well as concrete skills. Her approach is informed by her extensive background in mindfulness, strengthened by years of teaching yoga and meditation and leading groups in clinical settings.
Joanne holds a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from Wilfrid Laurier University and is a registered member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW). With additional post-graduate training in approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Joanne is committed to on-going training and professional development.
Joanne’s background prior to her MSW degree includes working with immigrants, refugees and international students from a wide variety of countries in both academic and community settings. Having lived in Europe, Asia and the United States, Joanne is culturally sensitive and cognizant of challenges newcomers may face. She welcomes adult and adolescent clients; her areas of focus are body image, eating disorders, trauma, life transitions, and relationships.
