WHAT TO EXPECT
Congratulations on taking your first step towards taking care of your mental health!
The first question usually is, what to expect during counselling? Results vary depending on the client's willingness to challenge themselves!
We understand how vulnerable you can feel when first opening up to a counsellor. The truth is sometimes a therapist can be the right fit and sometimes they are not. Our rule of thumb is that if you have not had a "breakthrough" within six sessions of counselling, chances are you need to change your therapist. Having said that, it is also the client's job to come to therapy ready to WORK! It is up to you to put the effort in with us to change the way you cope and behave.
In your first session, there will be a biopsychosocial assessment. In this assessment, we create an overview of your entire life — from childhood to adulthood — and extrapolate significant causes of present mental health challenges, traumas, or medical conditions that you have. After this first session, we will then create a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs, using either Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused Therapy, or Narrative Therapy. This plan will provide short & long-term goals that will guide you toward your desired outcome.
You have the power to lead the session. Our role in sessions is to guide you and pinpoint areas overlooked that may have created destructive behaviours that have prevented you from moving forward. The above plan is definitely not a "one size fits all" type of therapy. If the treatment plan or goals do not fit your needs we will simply try another method.
