What to Expect from Individual Counselling
Beginning individual counselling can feel unfamiliar, especially if this is your first experience with therapy. Your therapist will take time to understand what brings you to counselling, answer your questions and work with you to identify goals for your sessions.

Opening up to a new therapist can feel vulnerable, and finding the right fit is an important part of individual counselling. Your therapist will work collaboratively with you, check in about how counselling is feeling and adjust the approach when needed. Progress looks different for everyone and will depend on your needs, goals, circumstances and pace.
During your first individual counselling session, your therapist will learn about your current concerns, relevant history, relationships, strengths and goals. This conversation may include a biopsychosocial assessment to better understand the factors affecting your well-being. Together, you will begin developing a personalized treatment plan that may include both short and long-term goals.
Individual counselling is a collaborative process, and you remain an active participant in each session. Your therapist will offer guidance, help you notice patterns and explore approaches that support your goals. If something does not feel helpful, you can discuss it openly so the treatment plan or therapeutic approach can be adjusted to better fit your needs.
